Creations

Here's a sampling of the many designs I've been involved in. In all projects, I worked through or led project teams through a process that includes discovery, persona and scenario documentation, concept generation, wireframing, prototyping, user research, iterative designs, development, testing, and release.

You can also visit Out of the Blue Media for ideas of video work I have helped produce.

browser-based design

Speech recognition requires a huge amount of data analysis by internal teams. A loop of analysis tools was commissioned that could serve a wide range of users across a wide range of data types. I designed the browser-based end-to-end interaction approach, the unified UI presentations, and the interaction framework that would guide future development. The goal was an extensible visual suite of tools that supported both visual monitoring but also detailed analysis work. I helped guide the effort toward this goal, and used strategic conversations, personas, scenarios, sketching, wireframes, guerilla usability testing, and iterative coding to get there.

User profile wireframes
A company that helps hospitals efficiently manage financials commissioned an overhaul of their flagship product used by hundreds of people at dozens of hospitals. I worked as a subcontractor to Portland, OR-based design firm to produce the interaction design within wireframes for the installation and configuration portion of the complex product. Our four person team followed a rigorous process of deep user research, persona and scenario discovery, iterative ideation, and collaborative design.

The Audio Inspection portal, an internal browser-based tool, enables voice designers and others to listen and assess interactions between the automated voice system and callers. The focus of the design was to enable fast and easy: listening with audio control, data entry, and stored record access. The design and development were highly iterative with plenty of user feedback.

Electronic book Chapter view sketch
A publisher of technical books wanted to break out of the PDF e-book experience mold and create new ways for readers, authors, and editors to interact with book content. This sketch is from the primary design direction that was taken, in collaboration with the developer, prior to the project being shelved.

I departed somewhat from the norm to show a bit of personality while maintaining simplicity and clarity.

The Western Wireless / Cellular One account information line was a redesign of the experience, interaction, and interface of an existing speech system that was not performing well. The effort produced a pioneering multi-persona system featuring simplified and direct navigation to the most requested information. ROI was achieved in a few months and customer feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Call routing

listen
Call routing (or steering) systems are among the most difficult automated applications to get right. Challenges include using open prompts, the deceptive appearance of these applications, and coping with wide variety of callers and call reasons that will arrive in the application. But the robust design exceeded performance expectations within the first two weeks and ultimately routes calls to the right location about 99% of the time.

other design

I've designed more than typical projects. At Intervoice and Microsoft I guided a refresh of design processes and methods. At SpeechCycle I brought engineers and operations personnel into the design efforts. In the Leading by Design program at CCA, I envisioned, researched, and planned a new approach to life-long learning with the goal of sustainable employment. Also at Microsoft, I led the team that produced the 5-year vision video, an edited version of which is here, which required a definition of that vision, finding and scripting the right expression, and managing the process end-to-end.
